Anonymous asked: Your victim blaming response, A++ thank u

You’re very welcome. When I got my “Someone asked you a question” email I was a bit scared to open it. Haha. But thank you. I just get very frustrated when people say things like “people get offended by anything” or when they vehemently defend someone who has said problematic things just because of who they are. Your idols are not above reproach! No matter the intentions or what was meant, if multiple people say they were hurt by your words then you should apologise. You should say more with your actions after the fact.

Victim blaming

geometricelectric:

Okay, so there’s a fuckton of shit surrounding things that Carrie Fletcher have supposedly said ‘victim blaming’, and I think it’s something I need to talk about. First of all, if there were someone that irresponsible, who would be pro-victim blaming, then they would NOT have the audience Carrie…

The problem was more around the language used and the fact that the term “Self Respect” was used, which is very problematic. It implies that if people who have suffered abuse had had more of it, they wouldn’t be in their situation. Which is entirely untrue. Of course I am all for individual responsibilities when it comes to preventing sexual assault but that is always the individual responsibility of abusers not to abuse or rape.

"Rapists are mentally ill people [NOT, might I add, incredibly horny people. Do some research.]" - You should probably do some research too. The majority of men convicted of rape are ordinary men. They are not mentally ill. They’re merely men brought up in a world ingrained with the notion that women are lesser human beings. This whole just world fallacy nonsense and the analogy of “walking into the road” is of no weight here. It only helps further perpetuate that if victims had behaved a certain way, or done certain things that what happened to them would not have happened.

In the end, Carrie literally only had to say “I’m really sorry to anyone I’ve unintentionally hurt. I didn’t realise the things I said could be construed in such a way that would be conceived as victim blaming. That was not at all what I meant. Thank you to everyone who made me aware of this”. Rather than accusing everyone of jumping on her, allowing her Mother to condescend to those few who spoke up about it (people like Lex and Lindsey) and then after apologising, continuing to reblog and retweet those are still speaking up for her, effectively nullifying her apology.

It all could’ve been solved so quickly.

Still one of my fav The Smiths covers. Dee Dee’s voice is on point.
